How to Enable Two-Factor (2FA) Verification for Instagram

Updated: Oct 28

Securing your Instagram account is critical in protecting your personal photos, videos, and messages from unauthorized access. As Instagram continues to be a popular platform for sharing life's moments, the need for enhanced security measures grows. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for Instagram provides an important layer of protection, requiring not only your password but also a verification code sent to a device you own. This dual-authentication method significantly reduces the likelihood of someone else gaining access to your account, safeguarding your digital memories and private communications. This guide will walk you through the process of enabling 2-Step Verification for your Instagram account, ensuring your social media presence is secure. By activating 2FA, you're taking a crucial step in protecting your Instagram account, giving you peace of mind as you connect and share with the world.

1. Download Authenticator App Before you can set up 2-Step Verification for your Instagram account, you'll need to download the Authenticator app on your device. You can find it by searching in the App Store for Apple devices or on Google Play for Android devices.

Step 2: Open the Instagram app on your device and go to your profile by tapping your profile picture in the bottom right.

Step 3: Tap the menu (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner, then tap 'Account Center' at the bottom.

Step 4: In the Settings menu, tap 'Security.'

Step 5: In the Account Center, tap Password and Security and then tap Two-Factor Authentication.

Step 6: Next, select the account you want to secure with 2FA.

Step 7: You'll see options for two-factor authentication methods. Select 'Authentication App' as your preferred method. Instagram might prompt you to download an authentication app if you haven't already, but since you have Authenticator installed, proceed by tapping 'Next.'

Step 8: Now, you'll see a code. Tap Copy Key to copy it. Open the Authenticator app on your device, tap the plus icon (+) to add a new account, and paste the Key shown on Instagram.

Step 9: After pasting the key code, Authenticator will generate a 6-digit verification code. Go back to Instagram and enter this code to verify the setup.

Step 10: Once verified, Instagram will enable 2FA for your account. You may also be provided with backup codes. Save these codes in a secure place, as they can be used to access your account if you cannot generate codes through Authenticator.

With these steps completed, your Instagram account now has an additional layer of security, safeguarding it against unauthorized access. Using Authenticator for 2FA ensures that only you can access your account, even if someone else knows your password.
